Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway

When I found these pictures of a narrow gauge railway in Wales, I just assumed that they showed part of the Ffestiniog Railway.  However, when I investigated I found that Llanfair and Castle Caereinion were not part of the Ffestiniog Railway at all - they were part of the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway!

It seems that my father was present as the railway was being restored after being out of operation since 1956.  I'm sure he'd be delighted to see that it is such a successful operation today.  The Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway website is well worth a visit, especially the Information page which provides an interesting history of the line.  Narrow Gauge Pleasure also contains a page about the railway.

The first section of the line to re-open in 1963 only went are far as Castle Caereinion.  The weeds in the track indicate that regular services hadn't been taking place for some time.

"The Earl" is still pulling passenger services today.
